Bulgaria's Ski Areas

BULGARIA has to be the best bargain destination in Europe for serious skiing. But that doesn’t mean it has skimped on skiing facilities. The days of antiquated lifts and poor runs are long over thanks to massive investment in the main ski resorts, notably Bansko and Borovets. But as an emerging Eastern European nation, Bulgaria is still exceptionally cheap, both for skiing itself and for accommodation, restaurants and bars.

Plus its natural beauty is largely unspoilt with a conscious effort now being made to ensure ski development is ecological sound and preserves the surrounding scenery. And down from the slopes, Bulgaria offers a fascinating glimpse of a very different way of life with beautifully-preserved cultural and historical monuments, simple villages, and stunning mountain backdrops.

That doesn’t mean Bulgaria has no nightlife though. The resorts are buzzing with après-ski bars and discos open until the early hours, with drink prices that won’t break the bank. Limited in scale for the very serious skier, Bulgaria nevertheless has plenty for those at most ability levels and particularly for beginners. This is the ideal budget destination to try skiing or snowboarding for the first time.

bansko

BANSKO

THE THREE peaks that form the core of the Bansko ski zone in Bulgaria’s Pirin mountains comfortably provide skiing and snowboarding for all levels of ability, at an altitude that promises plenty of snow throughout the season, which runs from mid December until as late as mid May.

Heavy investment has made this the most modern of Bulgaria’s ski resorts. A telecabin takes skiers up to the first of the mountain runs but it is possible to ski back right to the village-resort of Bansko itself. Runs include some difficult blacks but are mostly red or easier, making this ideal for beginners. The village is at just 900 or so meters above sea level but the highest lift is over 2,500 meters. Snow cannons keep the lower runs open.

The village itself offers plenty of modern accommodation so every comfort is available but all new buildings have been tastefully-designed to blend in with the old village style, which reflects Bansko’s status as an official settlement of unique cultural importance.
Après-ski restaurants, bars, cafes and nightclubs abound and you won’t believe the low prices they charge. Transfers from Sofia take around four hours.

borovets

BOROVETS

BULGARIA’S oldest ski resort, Borovets has been open for more than 90 years. That does not mean its ski and snowboard facilities are not up to the minute. Heavy investment has kept the resort up to speed. The village is at 1,300 meters above sea level and the highest lift is above 2,500 meters so snow is reliable throughout the season. Runs are mainly red or easier so it’s great for beginners and ideal for rusty skiers to rediscover their skill.sIt lies only 70 kilometers or so from Sofia airport so transfers are quick and easy.

The town itself was established in the 19th century as a hunting lodge for Bulgaria’s kings. The result is that the town’s sights include Bistritsa, a royal palace! Modern hotels blend in well with the older architecture but offer every comfort. Borovets is set amid beautiful pine forests that make a walk in the woods an optional alternative to skiinG.

A telecabin takes those who want to ski or snowboard up to the wide open snows of the ski zone. By night there are plenty of bars, restaurants, cafes and clubs all charging amazingly low prices.
